THE FLU!!

This is going to be a short post. I thought maybe we would squeak through flu season without getting hit. But it looks like Son #2 has the flu.

I worry about flu season every year, but this year it seems to be hitting younger people, and also taking the lives of people who were healthy. So what does that mean for those of us with asthma? We already have a hard time breathing, and with the flu on top of it, that spells trouble.

So, how do you know if it's a cold or the flu? I did a search on Webmd, and here is a screen shot from their website, it's what they say about a cold vs the flu:

Symptoms
Cold
Flu

FeverRareCharacteristic, high
(100-102 degrees F); lasts three to four days

HeadacheRareProminent

General Aches, PainsSlightUsual; often severe

Fatigue, WeaknessQuite mildCan last up to two to three weeks

Extreme ExhaustionNeverEarly and prominent

Stuffy NoseCommonSometimes

SneezingUsualSometimes

Sore ThroatCommonSometimes

Chest Discomfort,
Cough
Mild to moderate;
hacking cough
Common; can become severe

Complications
Sinus congestion
or earache
Bronchitis, pneumonia;
can be life-threatening

We realized that Son #2's symptoms were from the flu, so we headed to the doctor. When you have severe asthma, you can't take any chances.

We came home with a lot of medicine for him to take, but I don't mind. It helps keep him alive!

If you have any questions, don't wait until you get so bad that you are having a hard time breathing. Check with your doctor or head to the closest Instacare.

You can never be too careful when you have asthma.....

  1. I hope he feels better soon. Did he get the flu shot? If so, did they swab him to see which strain he has? Was it a strain that isn't in the vaccine?

    1. Hi Poodle Mama,

      He did have the flu shot, or it would have been much worse.

      They didn't swab him, because it had been 3 days, so they said it wouldn't matter. They would treat it the same way.

      Thankfully they know what to do with people with severe asthma!
