Banning Fireworks for 4th of July

I live in an area that is in a prolonged drought (at least 25 years).

Lakes are literally drying up and we have dust storms and tumbleweeds being blown across the road. Not kidding.

This also means it's a disastrous fire season. So far this year, we've had almost 400 separate fires (most of them human caused), and they have burned over 300,000 square miles. 3 fire fighters were killed in a flash over and 2 were critically injured. Also not kidding.

So it was a relief when local mayors started banning fireworks.

I hate fireworks

Why?

Because firework smoke almost killed my son when he was young.

Those of you who have read my posts before know that Son #2 ended up in ICU during one 4th of July weekend - all thanks to smoke from neighborhood fireworks. (You can read more details in another post

I'm naturally, I'm NOT a big fan of fireworks.

I have also had many asthma attacks from the smoke that's full of heavy metals - and it reaches toxic levels during the 4th of July weekend.

Luckily, I haven't ended up in the ER or hospital. Probably because I stay inside my house with the air purifiers on full blast....

Don't get me wrong - I'm very patriotic and my dad served in World War II. I have my flag decorations up inside and outside my house, watch the local parade, and always tear up when they play the National Anthem.

But, do we have to blow stuff up and pollute our neighborhood to celebrate being an American?

Others affected by fireworks

It's not just people with lung or heart issues that are impacted by the smoke.

Our animal shelters are usually full the weekend of 4th of July because animals are scared and run away from home.

Do you have a military veteran in your family? They are also affected by the explosions - especially if they have PTSD.

Alternatives

Many cities near me have started to offer drone shows, and I'm amazed by what they can do with drones! They make elaborate shapes in the air, change colors, etc.

My kids are adults now, but I know they would still LOVE to have a light saber fight. What better time to have an epic Star Wars battle then at night with the light sabers glowing?

Our friends come over and bring glow in the dark bracelets, necklaces, etc.

If you are in an area that is still shooting off fireworks, please be careful. The fireworks smoke and asthma are NOT a good mix.

It might help to check your reliever inhaler and make sure you have enough puffs left in it if you need it this weekend.

Stay safe!

Hugs,

Andrea
