2021 Worst Places to Live with Allergies
(https://www.aafa.org/allergy-capitals/)
Yes, I'm writing about allergies AGAIN. Our family is already miserable this year.
AAFA (Allergy & Asthma Foundation of America), has just released this year's list of the worst places to live for allergies.
For all of you fans of "The Office", you know all about Scranton, Pennsylvania. Personally, I have never watched The Office........ don't hate me!
Michael Scott's city of Scranton is the Number 1 worst place for allergies (yes, I had to Google the name of the boss on The Office - sorry Office fans!)
So how does AAFA score the cities?
AAFA looks at:
- Fall and spring pollen levels
-
Use of over-the-counter allergy meds
-
How many board-certified allergists
Pollen levels
We have a local allergy offices who posts the pollen count on their Facebook page. If you want to know the pollen count for your area, you can look on the National Allergy Bureau (NAB) Pollen Counts. You can also create an account through NAB and receive email updates about pollen in your area.
Over the counter allergy meds
Our family buys allergy pills and nose spray in bulk from the warehouse store. (Not kidding....there are 5 of us with allergies and 4 of us with asthma.) My 3 adult children still need allergy meds even after having 5 years worth of allergy shots 😖 We found it to be more affordable to buy our allergy meds in bulk
We also buy tissues in bulk. It's helpful for us to buy the tissues that have lotion in them. Trying to avoid the red nose effect.
Allergy specialists
Do you know how many board certified allergy doctors are in your area? American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) has an allergist finder page. You can put your city into the search, and it will find allergists in your area. Pretty cool!
So now that you are miserable with allergies, now what?
AAFA has 12 tips that will help with allergies. It usually helps if you take allergy medicine AND make some new habits (like taking your shoes off before you go in the house, keeping the windows closed to keep the pollen out, etc.)
Good luck fellow allergy sufferers! I feel your misery! 😩
